Start with the installed system
If you are replacing cards or tags, begin with the reader manufacturer, model and current credential specification. Two tags operating at the same frequency can use different protocols, memory layouts or authentication methods. A matching frequency does not guarantee a working replacement.
Low frequency: 125 kHz
LF credentials are relevant to installed access and identification systems. Specify the IC, modulation and expected data format. A phone with NFC cannot read a 125 kHz credential simply because both technologies are contactless.
High frequency: 13.56 MHz
HF includes several interfaces. ISO/IEC 14443 based credentials and ISO/IEC 15693 based tags serve different reader ecosystems. Confirm the exact protocol and command support. NFC is part of the broader HF landscape, with additional requirements for tag type and encoded content.
NFC: a deliberate tap
For an interaction with a phone, define the target devices and the NDEF message. A URL is often enough for product information; the website behind that URL can change without rewriting the tag. Test representative phones, tag placement and the final packaging.
UHF: inventory and bulk identification
Roxtron’s UHF label range supports EPC Class 1 Gen2 applications. Selection must account for the deployment region, antenna, mounting material, tag orientation and reader installation. Metal and liquids can change performance substantially. Confirm local operating requirements with your system integrator.
Specify performance as a test condition
Avoid selecting a tag by a single advertised read distance. Define reader power, antenna, orientation, tag population, object material and the environment. Measure performance using the finished item and the actual reader installation.
