Product selection and engineering qualification

Convert a product requirement into a measurable specification and a repeatable approval process.

Specify the application before the enclosure

Define what constitutes a successful transaction, where it occurs and which reader performs it. Record the operating environment and the expected service life. A key fob, card, label or wristband is a physical platform; its suitability depends on the selected IC, antenna and construction.

Test the finished construction

Validate labels on the intended item and discs inside the assembled enclosure. Include packaging, liquids, metal and adjacent components where they form part of normal use. For wristbands, test representative wearer fit and operating positions. NIST’s application requirements framework includes transaction conditions and the environment between transactions. NIST SP 800-98: Guidelines for Securing RFID Systems, 2007.

Separate IC limits from product limits. A semiconductor temperature rating does not establish the allowable temperature of a printed card, adhesive label or molded wristband. Similarly, a materials description does not establish an ingress protection or chemical resistance rating.

Define measurable acceptance criteria

Specify the required transaction, number of trials, representative sample conditions and permitted failures. State the exact exposure sequence for environmental testing. A description such as “waterproof” or “long range” is insufficient without a method and acceptance threshold.

For encoding, verify the association between visible identifiers and stored data. For access credentials, include invalid or revoked credentials in the test plan. For bulk inventory, record item arrangements and tag populations. Preserve the test configuration so a later production batch can be assessed consistently.

Control repeat orders and changes

Record the approved model, chip, memory variant, antenna or construction reference, artwork and encoding revision. Establish which substitutions require review. A common exterior does not establish equivalence if the IC or internal antenna changes.

Include initial quantity, repeat demand, sample requirements and delivery destination in the quotation request. Confirm current availability and production timing for the approved configuration. This provides a clear link between the technical approval and the commercial order.
