RAIN RFID and UHF labels for inventory and assets

RAIN RFID refers to passive UHF RFID using the GS1 UHF Gen2 and ISO/IEC 18000 63 air interface. It enables identification of tagged items through compatible readers. Product selection must account for the operating region, antenna, item material and the business meaning of the encoded identifier.

Select the chip and memory architecture

Define the EPC length, serialization method and any user memory requirement. EPC, TID and user memory serve different purposes. A chip family name may cover multiple memory and performance variants, so specify the complete IC part number. Review the selected IC page and primary documentation before assigning application data.

Match the antenna to the installation

The broad UHF designation does not establish regulatory suitability in every country. Provide the deployment region and reader configuration. Evaluate the finished tag on the actual item, including orientation, liquids, conductive surfaces, packaging and tag population. Read range is a system measurement, not a property that can be guaranteed from the IC alone.

Printing and EPC encoding

For roll labels, specify the finished size, antenna footprint, adhesive, liner, pitch, winding direction, core diameter and printer model. Define EPC allocation and duplicate prevention, the relationship to the printed code, readback validation and handling of failed labels. Agree whether the reader workflow uses only EPC identification or also TID and user memory.

Qualify the business workflow

Define the intended read zone and acceptable behavior at its boundaries. Test item association, missed reads, unintended reads and repeated scans at realistic handling speeds. A technically readable tag is useful only when the software associates the identifier with the correct item and event. Approve representative samples before manufacture.

Compare IC options
